Yi Ki-ung was born in Seongyojang, Gangneung, Korea. He began his career as a publisher in 1960. Ever since he founded Youlhwadang Publishers in 1971, Yi has actively developed art publishing in Korea. In 1988, he initiated the Paju Bookcity and became president of the Bookcity Cultural Foundation. An accomplished author himself, he has been invited to participate in the Korea Pavilion of the Leipzig Book Fair. He also serves as the president of the International Culture Cities Exchange Association and organised the traveling exhibition Scripts of the World in 2014.
